Equal Opportunities and Gender Equality Plan – IHBT

During the period from January to March 2022, a gender audit was conducted at the Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (IHBT) according to the Standard of Gender Audit by the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic and in line with European policy and gender equality objectives. In order for the process to reflect the actual situation as much as possible, the IHBT management decided to commission an external company, Open Society, o.p.s., which specializes in gender policy and conducts gender audits.

There were several reasons for the audit,

  • from 2022, applicants for European grants are required to state whether their institution has a gender equality plan (Horizon Europe_Gender Equality Plan - criteria)
  • for grant projects of the Czech Science Foundation implemented from 2023, a requirement to document an existing gender equality plan (a similar direction can be expected for other national funding providers as well)
  • to become an employer at the European level and actively participate in improving working conditions and opportunities for employees, reconciliation of work and personal life, international mobility and other aspects of HR policy

The audit included,

analysis of public and non-public institutional documents and furthermore qualitative (focus groups and individual semi-structured interviews) and quantitative (questionnaire survey) research.
Employees, including managers and members of the IHBT leadership, had the opportunity to express themselves, for example, on working environment, reconciliation of personal and professional life, opportunities for education and professional development and other topics of personnel and gender policy.

The audit focused on five key areas,

  • Recruitment and selection of workforce, employee dismissal
  • Vertical and horizontal structure of the workforce and career policy
  • Evaluation, remuneration and education
  • Family-friendly working environment (work-life balance programs)
  • Organizational culture

The audit showed,

positive aspects of IHBT as an employer, but also pointed out areas for improvement that IHBT will focus on within the newly established Equal Opportunities and Gender Equality Plan over the next 5 years. This Plan, based on the results and recommendations of the gender audit, has 4 phases - analysis/audit, plan creation, implementation and evaluation. You can find which phase IHBT is in the plan schedule (found below in the Important Documents section).

IHBT's ambitious plan does not end here,

IHBT's next plan is to apply for an HR Award in the coming years.
