Gallery of Directors

MUDr. Josef Kidery, CSc.

(1952-1957)

First director of UHKT, renowned transfusiologist and co-founder of the Czech Haematological Society. Under his leadership, UHKT focused on the issues of blood substitute solutions, immunohaematology began to develop. UHKT became a center for building transfusion services, a clinical department was established and research activity in the field of coagulation, anemias and blood malignancies developed. UHKT became the seat of the specialized Subdepartment for Haematology and Transfusion Services. During his tenure, a scientific library was built and the publication of the abstract journal Excerpta Haematologica was launched.

Prof. MUDr. Jaroslav Hořejší, DrSc.

(1957-1976)

He was a respected internist-hepatologist, engaged in laboratory support for clinical fields. He was co-founder of clinical biochemistry and central biochemical laboratories, worked on plasma fractionation and developed a method for obtaining gammaglobulin fraction. Under his leadership, laboratories were established that dealt with biochemistry of blood components and coagulation issues.

MUDr. Eduard Dobrý, CSc.

(1976-1984)

He devoted himself to the development of transfusion services in our country. He continued the tradition of research and development of transfusion products and supported the development of the experimental sector of UHKT, which dealt with this issue. He founded a bank of rare blood groups. The completion of UHKT construction continued, including structural modifications, and transfusiology was successfully incorporated into both undergraduate and postgraduate medical training.

Prof. MUDr. Karel Smetana, DrSc.

(1984-1990)

As a cytologist, he dealt with cytochemistry and ultrastructure of blood cells in relation to their physiology and pathology in various states of hematopoiesis including malignant blood diseases. Under his leadership, UHKT promoted a program for bone marrow and hematopoietic cell transplantation, a program for deep freezing of blood cells with the establishment of a cryobank was developed, an apheresis unit was established within the transfusion department. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, such as the State Prize of the Czechoslovak Republic, the Scientific Prize of the Ministry of Health, the Purkyně Medal, the Wilhelm Benhard Medal and many others.

Prof. MUDr. Jan Neuwirt, DrSc.

(1990-1993)

He was an outstanding representative of experimental and pathological physiology with a focus on haematology. He became famous especially for his studies of iron metabolism in red blood cell series cells. During his tenure, the Department of Cytogenetics and Virology was established. He significantly contributed to the establishment of the grant agency of the Ministry of Health.

MUDr. Antonín Hradílek, CSc.

(1994—1996)

He was a successor and close collaborator of Prof. Neuwirt. He dealt with erythropoiesis and metabolism in red blood cells. He completed the establishment of a tissue culture laboratory for modeling physiological and pathological processes in blood cells. With his help, the construction of laboratories dealing with virology in relation to malignant diseases was completed.

MUDr. RNDr. Petr Jarolím, DrSc.

(1996-2002)

He was a successor of the tradition of physiologists and laboratory haematologists with a focus on clinical haematology from the school of Professor Neuwirt. He dealt with molecular haematology of red blood cells in close connection with clinical practice and transfusiology. He described the molecular basis of a range of hereditary anemias and blood group antigens. During his tenure, reconstruction of the clinical department took place.

Prof. MUDr. Pavel Klener, DrSc.

(2002-2007)

He is a recognized internist with a focus on oncology and haematology. In 2012 he received the main National Prize of the Czech Head project for pioneering the introduction of chemotherapy for malignant tumors into clinical practice, explaining it with modern molecular biology findings and establishing this discipline in Czechoslovakia. During his tenure, new outpatient department facilities were built at UHKT. Furthermore, the institute garden was recultivated so that patients had the opportunity to stay in a pleasant environment.

Prof. Ing. Jan Evangelista Dyr, DrSc.

(2007-2009)

He dealt with the structure and function of hemocoagulation proteins including modern methodological approaches. He and his collaborators became famous especially for the study of fibrinogen. He was the editor of the journal Thrombosis Research. He placed great emphasis on scientific activity of the institute including its inclusion in scientific research programs.

Prof. MUDr. Trněný, CSc.

(2009-2013)

Recognized internist and haematologist, closely collaborated with diagnostic and laboratory complementary as well as theoretical medical fields. He is one of the founders of the Cooperative Lymphoma Group, which he leads. He supported research programs on blood malignancies and successfully sought to create conditions for their more accurate diagnosis and better therapy, including diagnostically-oriented laboratories. During his tenure, the transfusion department including apheresis units and tissue cryobank developed. UHKT underwent JCI reaccreditation.
