Laboratory for Prevention of Viral Infections

The Laboratory for Prevention of Viral Infections is engaged in detecting the presence of markers of blood-borne infections – hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Treponema pallidum pallidum (TP) bacterium, primarily in clients of the Transfusiology Division.

Apart from this basic set of blood samples that we test every working day after the end of blood sampling so that test results are available the same day to physicians of the Transfusiology Division, we test blood samples from the Clinical Division.

Basic tests, legally mandatory for transfusion service, include the detection of hepatitis B virus surface antigen, antibodies specific for human immunodeficiency virus as well as p24 capsid antigen, antibodies against hepatitis C virus and currently not mandatory HCV capsid antigen, and finally antibodies against Treponema pallidum pallidum causing syphilis.

In addition to these basic tests, we also detect the presence of antibodies against hepatitis B virus capsid antigen (anti-HBcAg) – a mandatory test for stem cell donors, other markers of HBV infection (antibodies against surface (S) antigen, antibodies against e antigen and e antigen) and antibodies against human cytomegalovirus of the IgG class. We perform these complementary tests as needed.

All tests are performed as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA); basic tests with the EVOLIS automated analyzer, additional tests in manual regime.

The laboratory is part of the IHBT Lab Complex, medical laboratories accredited by the Czech Accreditation Institute (CAI) according to the Czech standard ČSN EN ISO 15189:2007. All methods used are accredited.
