Department of Molecular Genetics

Administrative and personal data about the department.

The main fields of research in the group of Dr. Bruchová are expression studies of microRNAs in hematopoietic cells derived from healthy donors as well as patients with leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), gene expression profiling in MDS patients using Illumina microarrays and SNP detection in population studies using Luminex platform.

The group of Dr. Haškovec is mainly interested in studies of gene expression in leukemic cells. Searching of new molecular markers of residual disease (e.g. Wt-1 gene) and molecular prognostic factors (e.g. LAA genes as BAALC, PRAME etc.) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Dr. Moravcová´s group deals with the study of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) biology with a particular interest in transition from chronic to acute phase and in the search of early markers of disease acceleration. At present, the group focuses on the study of the mechanism of resistance to specific targeted therapy of CML, ie. resistance to Imatinib and other tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

The group of Dr. Včelíková is engaged in elucidation of regulation pathways of telomere-telomerase complex in hematopoietic stem cells and analysis the dynamics of telomere length, telomerase activity and the status of methylation in CpG islands of gene promoters with the/particular aim to establish their validity as prognostic markers in patients with leukemia and MDS.

Many results of the research at the Department of Molecular Genetics are further introduced into clinical practice at our Institute and they contribute to the precision of diagnosis of various types of leukemias, for monitoring of residual disease after chemotherapy or stem cell transplantations (SCT), in assessment of engraftment of donor cells after SCT. These acredited molecular examinations are performed at National Reference Laboratory for DNA Diagnostics (NRL)
