History of the Institute

The Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion was founded in Prague in 1952 as a state owned (governmental) research institute under the Czech Ministry of Health. The Institute integrates a hematological clinic, facilities for blood collection and routine and research laboratories. Its aims are both research and treatment of malignant blood diseases and blood coagulation disorders especially leukemia. The Institute plays a leading role in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation program in the Czech Republic.

The institute is responsible for the National Registry of Blood Transfusion Service in the Czech Republic. Laboratories serve as reference laboratories responsible for control in the Czech Republic (Reference Laboratory in Blood Coagulation Methods, Reference Laboratory for Immunohematology (red cells), Reference Laboratory for DNA diagnostics, Reference Laboratory for Human Papillomavirus - HPV).
